What schools usually do with these scores

Grouping. Screener results sort kids into small skill groups for reading and math. Groups are re-dealt after each testing window — fall, winter, spring — so a score follows your kid for about a trimester, not a year.
Extra help and enrichment. Kids below benchmark usually get small-group support, checked every week or two. Kids far above it are the pool schools draw on for enrichment.

What it measures: Adaptive reading and math achievement/growth assessment.
Why it matters: Tracks your kid's growth against national norms through the year. Often one of the numbers behind advanced-placement decisions.
Affects placement: MAP is the first gate for every District 54 advanced track. Students in 2nd through 5th grade are screened on MAP for elementary gifted services and for the elementary magnet program; 6th graders are screened for the junior high Discovery and magnet programs. Only students who clear the MAP bar are invited to the January cognitive test. The district requires a "history of achieving" the score "over time", not a single qualifying administration. K-2 students with high MAP scores receive scheduled enrichment/acceleration during the week rather than formal identification.

What it measures: Verbal and nonverbal reasoning. District 54 refers to it only as "an online cognitive skills test" and does not publish which instrument it uses.
