Privacy Policy

The short version
- You can use most of Knowbell — district lookups, benchmarks, score checks — with no account and no personal information at all.
- If you create an account, we store your email and the child profiles you enter: first name, grade, and school district. That's it.
- We never record or store your child's voice. Practice tests use your browser's built-in speech recognition; audio never reaches our servers.
- No ads, no selling data. Analytics uses a cookie to count visits — with all advertising features off, nothing follows you to other sites.
What we collect
Knowbell is built to need as little of your family's information as possible. Here is the complete list of what we collect:
- Your account email — only if you choose to create an account. Accounts are optional; they exist so you can save child profiles and practice history.
- Child profiles you enter — a first name (a nickname is fine), a grade, and a school district. You, the parent, type this in. We ask for nothing else about your child: no birthdate, no photos, no school records.
- Practice results — today, practice results are shown at the end of a session and are not stored anywhere. If we add saved progress for account holders, we will update this policy first.
- Usage analytics— we use Google Analytics to see which pages are visited and where visitors come from. It sets a cookie in your browser to tell visits apart. We keep Google's advertising and cross-site features turned off, and analytics measures page visits — never your child's practice content or results.
Score checks are different on purpose: when you enter your child's test scores to compare against published benchmarks, that comparison happens in your browser. The scores you type into the score checker are not sent to or stored on our servers.
What we deliberately do not collect
- No audio recordings. Some practice tests are read aloud, so here is exactly how that works: your browser's own speech recognition (the Web Speech API) listens and turns speech into text on the spot. Knowbell never records, stores, or transmits audio to our servers. Your browser vendor's speech service (for example, the one built into Chrome or Safari) may process the audio transiently to produce the transcription — the same way it does when you dictate a text message. Only the resulting words, and the score they produce, ever reach Knowbell.
- Nothing directly from children. Knowbell is a tool for parents. Parents create accounts, parents enter profiles, and parents start practice sessions. We do not ask children for any information about themselves.
- No ads, no ad-tech. There is no advertising on Knowbell and no third-party advertising technology anywhere in the product.
- No selling of data. We do not sell, rent, or trade your data or your child's data to anyone.
- No cross-site tracking. No fingerprinting and no following you around the web. Our analytics sets a cookie to count visits on this site only — we keep its advertising and cross-site features off.
How your data is stored
Account and profile data is stored with Supabase, our database provider, in the United States. Each family's data is isolated with row-level security: the database itself enforces that your account can only read and write your own family's profiles and results — not just the app code. Our hosting provider is Vercel.
Retention and deletion
We keep your account data for as long as you keep your account. Deleting your account removes the child profiles and practice history attached to it. To request deletion of your account and its data, email us at hello@knowbell.co and we will confirm when it is done.
Children's privacy
Knowbell is designed for parents. Accounts belong to parents, all profile information is entered by the parent, and practice sessions are started under the parent's account. We keep the information about each child to a minimum on purpose — a first name or nickname, a grade, and a district — and we do not collect information from children themselves. During spoken practice tests, audio is handled entirely by the browser as described above and is never recorded or stored by Knowbell. If you believe a child has provided us information directly, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and its effective date. For meaningful changes — anything that expands what we collect — we will notify account holders by email before the change takes effect.
